If you are new to exporting timber, exporter of commercial products or perhaps you just need a refresher, we have prepared this guide to assist you in avoiding those unnecessary headaches. You will learn on export regulations, like what it is, who needs it, how do you get it and plus all you need to know on ISPM 15.
What is ISPM?
ISPM stands for the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures. The 15 is because it’s the 15th publication. This certification is a requirement for the export or import of wooden packaging. The aim of this certification is to regulate wood packaging used in trade, and to reduce the risk of introduction and spread of diseases and pests.

So if you’re shipping goods overseas into countries that have implemented ISPM 15, and using wooden pallet(s), then you will need to ensure that the wood packaging in the consignment complies with the standard and has been certified. In short, your wooden pallets will need to carry the ISPM 15 stamp.
Thankfully, this is not something you necessarily need to manage. Depending on the timber you need, you will find your timber manufacturer will take care of the ISPM requirements for you. You just need to mention your exporting needs at the time of requesting a quote.

ISPM – Q/A Guide
- It is the first international commodity based standard and sets out criteria for regulating wood packaging material used in international trade.
- ISPM 15 was developed to address the global spread of timber pests by regulating the movement of timber packing and dunnage used in international freight.
- Wood packaging that has been either heat treated or fumigated with methyl bromide to the specification given in ISPM 15 and bears the internationally recognised certification mark can be exported and accepted into countries that use the system.

- Only certified treatment providers and/or wood packaging manufacturers can apply the internationally recognised certification mark.
