The business was started by brothers Joe and Bill Borg, trading as UNITED BOX COMPANY. Operations were commenced on the 1st March 1970 manufacturing timber lettuce boxes for local market gardeners, using off-cut timber from nearby timber yards. During the next five years (1970-75), the business underwent its first transformation, as:
- Joe and Bill took on another two partners: a younger brother Tony and a family friend named Charlie Azzopardi.
- Cardboard boxes came in widespread use by the market gardeners, timber lettuce boxes ceased to be manufactured.
- Joe and Bill met their mentor, Albert Morris, who not only took them under his wing and taught them the art of industrial packaging but also supplied them with materials, machinery and much needed funding to move UNITED BOX COMPANY into manufacturing timber cases, crates and pallets for industry.
Over the next ten years (1975-85), the business experienced significant growth and underwent it's second transformation, highlighted by:
- Changing the UNITED BOX COMPANY partnership into a proprietary company limited by shares
- Relocating to a much larger premises to cater not only for the then current growth but also for future expansion
- Survived (and grew stronger during) the downturns and recession of the late 70's and early '80s
- Took over it's first opposition box company
- Expanded into hardwood saw milling (since divested)
- Sales over the first 15 years grew at an astonishing and compounded rate of 41% p.a.
At this point in time the founders of the business realised that the phenomenal growth experienced over the 15 years needed to be consolidated so as to build for the future.
The next 10 years (1985-95) ushered in the third transformation which ultimately led to UNITED BOX COMPANY PTY LTD becoming the leader in it's field in New South Wales and second largest in Australia. This transformation witnessed:
- Huge investment in personnel and training to build the fundamental resources needed for future years
- The purchasing of it's first factory thus conforming with the founders' edict to own their manufacturing facilities. The purchasing of this first factory led the business into other Real Estate investments
- Substantial investment in technology for the company's administration and the investing in newer production equipment
- Whilst consolidating the tremendous growth of the previous period, UNITED continued growing, albeit at a subdued rate of 7% p.a. compounded
- Celebrated the 25th anniversary in business with a huge party and culminating with an affirmation by the Board to future direction.
1995-2005 brought about the business' fourth transformation, it continued to break new ground with innovations and initiatives previously unheard of in it's industry. Developments during these years included:
- Adopting a new trade name: UBEECO Packaging Solutions. The founders reasoned that this adoption was necessary as the business was no longer just making timber cases and pallets but increasingly providing a whole range of customized and generic packaging solutions
- The ownership of the business was restructured as the family friend Charles Azzopardi sought other interests. This resulted in the company now being owned by the 3 Borg brothers: Joe, Bill and Tony.
- Bringing the expertise of younger brother Andrew Borg over to run the business for a number of years bringing the company's professionalism to a new level.
- Expanded its range of products to include sole license for Australia and New Zealand of the QIKPAK™ range
- Established Strategic Alliances so as to provide customers with nation-wide packaging solutions
- Further expansion by way of acquisition (HBH Packaging & Smithfield Pallet) and the purchase of additional factories.
- A Fibreboard Packaging expert was brought on board to offer designs options to our customers
- Several members the Borg family's second generation came on board with UBEECO and with them the need to look at succession planning arose.
In recent years the growth path inclusive of future planning was maintained to ensure a secure and prosperous future for the UBEECO business and in turn remain a reliable source of supply for its customers. Some of the highlights since 2005 have been;
- The Board of Directors appointed a member of the second generation of Borg's as General Manager
- UBEECO was awarded Family Business of the Year (NSW & ACT) by Family Business Australia
- Further strengthened its market share by acquiring the business of Neville Cush & Co
